Gymnastics Australia (GA) is working with Sport Australia (SA) and the Institute of Child Protection Studies (ICPS) to conduct the Children’s Safety Survey within Gymnastics in Australia.
One of the 10 key National Principles for Child Safe Organisations is that “Children and young people are informed about their rights, participate in decisions affecting them and are taken seriously”.
The view of Gymnastics in Australia’s children and young people (over 90% of our participants are under the age of 12) is a valuable tool and must be considered in any organisation that is child safe. Therefore, in line with the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations and GA’s commitment to child safety, we are working with Sport Australia (SA) and the Institute of Child Protection Studies (ICPS) to provide our children and young people with a voice through a simple survey tool.
The Children’s Safety Survey will serve as a great tool to empower our children and young people as well as providing the Gymnastics community with insights about:
- The child safe culture within Gymnastics in Australia
- Who children are likely to speak to if they feel unsafe
- What barriers children face
- Where Gymnastics in Australia strengths are in relation to child safety and
- How our children perceive child safety
The ICPS, Children’s Safety Survey has already been used by a number of other organisations including sports and the results have been sometimes surprising but always valuable. Click here for a video about some of the answers already collected in previous surveys conducted by the ICPS.
Gymnastics Australia will be contacting randomly selected members (10-18 years of age) from across the country to provide them with the opportunity to tell us how they feel, when participating in gymnastics. The more people that complete the survey the better the results and the greater the understanding will be for the sport in regard to safety in gymnastics. The survey information will also help to drive education and awareness campaigns where required and is being conducted in line with the ACU Human Research Ethics.
